September 1 LSB 916 1 Kings 8 Solomon has the ark of the covenant brought into the Temple and prays a prayer of dedication for the Temple. Solomon offers many sacrifices to the Lord and holds a feast for all the people of Israel.

September 2 TLH 466 / LSB 909 1 Kings 9 The Lord appears to Solomon, promising to be present with His people at the Temple. However, He threatens to withdraw His presence if the people of Israel turn aside from following Him. The inspired writer summarizes the accomplishments of Solomon.

September 3 TLH 381 / LSB 587 1 Kings 10 The queen of Sheba visits Jerusalem in order to test Solomon and to witness his renowned wisdom for herself. The inspired writer records the great wealth of Solomon.

September 4 TLH 288 / LSB 865 1 Kings 11 Led astray by his many foreign wives, Solomon in his old age abandons the Lord and serves false gods. In response, the Lord raises up an adversary against Solomon.

September 5 TLH 517 / LSB 758 1 Kings 12 King Rehoboam ignores good advice and as a result the kingdom is divided, Rehoboam ruling over Judah and Jeroboam ruling over Israel. Jeroboam makes two calves of gold for the people of Israel to worship.

September 6 TLH 412 / LSB 698 1 Kings 13 A man of God prophesies against Jeroboam. Later the man disobeys the Lord and is killed.

September 8 TLH 68 / LSB 331 1 Kings 14 Ahijah prophesies against Jeroboam, and the son of Jeroboam dies. Jeroboam dies, and Nadab becomes king over Israel. Meanwhile Rehoboam reigns in Judah. He also commits idolatry. Rehoboam dies, and Abijam becomes king over Judah.

September 9 TLH 76 / LSB 383 1 Kings 15 Abijam continues the false worship of his father and the war against Jeroboam. Abijam dies, and Asa becomes king over Judah. Asa serves the Lord faithfully. Meanwhile Nadab rules over Israel and continues in the sins of his father. Baasha kills Nadab and becomes king of Israel.

September 10 LSB 558 1 Kings 16 Elah, Zimri, Omri, and Ahab rule over Israel. All of them are unfaithful to the Lord.

September 11 TLH 212 / LSB 493 Psalm 47 The Sons of Korah praise the Lord as the “king over all the earth.” We join them in their praise.

September 12 LSB 669 Psalm 48 The Sons of Korah praise the Lord for His greatness, for His victory, and for His steadfast love.

September 13 TLH 55 / LSB 350 Psalm 49 The Sons of Korah consider the futility of wealth and of worldliness. The Lord, in contrast, delivers His faithful people from death.

September 15 LSB 772 Psalm 50 Asaph presents the Lord as a mighty judge Who sees through the hypocrisy of insincere ritual. The Lord desires in His people true repentance and true faith in their Savior.

September 16 TLH p. 12 /LSB 956 Psalm 51 In the aftermath of his sin with Bathsheba, David pleads to the Lord for a clean heart and a right spirit. This is the fourth of the seven “penitential psalms.”

September 17 TLH 428 / LSB 729 Psalm 52 David laments his situation as enemies threaten his life. With David we put our trust in the Lord, and we wait for His justice and His love.

September 18 TLH 260 Psalm 53 We live among the wicked in this world. All of us are foolish and corrupt by nature. Those who trust in Jesus, however, receive forgiveness, new life, and salvation.

September 19 WS 784 / LSB 722 Psalm 54 David laments betrayal, while expressing thanksgiving and confidence in the deliverance of the Lord. God is our helper and our deliverer in every trouble.

September 20 TLH 518 / LSB 750 Psalm 55 Facing violence and betrayal, David turns to the Lord in prayer, confidently entrusting his life and his safety to the Lord. We, too, rely on the mercy of the Lord in the face of danger.

September 22 LSB 843 Numbers 12 Miriam and Aaron rebel against Moses. The Lord chastises, and the Lord forgives.

September 23 TLH 613 / LSB 672 Numbers 13 Moses sends twelve men to spy out the land of Canaan. Most of the spies bring a bad report to the people, causing fear among the people.

September 24 TLH 54 / LSB 918 Numbers 14 The people grumble against Moses and Aaron. Joshua and Caleb urge the people to trust in the Lord and to take the land, but the people refuse. Moses appeals to God for mercy. The Lord declares that the Israelites will wander forty years in the wilderness and that those who are twenty years old and older will never enter the Land of Promise. Without the blessing of the Lord, the people attempt to enter the land and are defeated by the Amalekites and the Canaanites.

September 25 TLH 237 / LSB 947 Numbers 15 The Lord provides laws regarding sacrifice, unintentional sin, punishment for breaking the Sabbath, and tassels on garments.

September 26 TLH 396 Numbers 16 Korah leads a rebellion against Moses and Aaron. The rebels experience the judgment of the Lord.

September 27 LSB 529 Numbers 17 By a miracle the Lord distinguishes Aaron from among the leaders of the twelve tribes, placing His seal of approval on the Levitical priesthood.

September 29 LSB 530 Numbers 18 Though Korah has led a rebellion of the Levites, the Lord reaffirms His calling of the Levites, outlining their responsibilities.

September 30 WS 750 / LSB 593 Numbers 19 The Lord provides a rite of purification for His people. We remember our Baptism, by which the Lord has cleansed us of our sin and has restored us as His own.
