July 2 TLH 258 / LSB 659 2 Samuel 21 David avenges the Gibeonites by permitting them to kill seven descendants of Saul. David and the army of Israel defeat the Philistines in battle.

July 3 LSB 884 2 Samuel 22 All of his enemies defeated, David memorializes the deliverance of the Lord in song. David attributes all of his success to the providence of the Lord. Ultimately the kingdom of David will be established in the reign of Jesus, the Messiah.

July 4 TLH 619 / LSB 674 2 Samuel 23 With his last words, David prophesies the eternal covenant of God, which will see its fulfillment in the reign of Jesus, the Messiah. The mighty men who were loyal to David are memorialized.

July 5 TLH 352 / LSB 527 2 Samuel 24 Arrogantly and foolishly, David imposes a census on Israel and Judah. As punishment for this sinful action, the Lord sends a pestilence on the land. David builds an altar and offers a sacrifice to the Lord, and the Lord ends the plague.

July 7 TLH 380 / LSB 565 Deuteronomy 9 Continuing his farewell address to the people of Israel, Moses reminds his people that the Lord is not giving them the Land of Canaan because of any righteousness on their part. Moses reminds the people of the golden calf incident.

July 8 TLH 439 / LSB 852 Deuteronomy 10 Moses reminds the people of the new tablets of stone that the Lord provided at Sinai. He recounts his prayer of intercession for them, which the Lord answered by sparing them. Moses urges the people to serve the Lord faithfully in repentance.

July 9 TLH 629 / LSB 867 Deuteronomy 11 The Christian life is a life of repentance, a life of receiving forgiveness from the Lord, and a life of thankful obedience.

July 10 TLH 234 / LSB 496 Deuteronomy 12 Moses commands the people to remove from the land all places of pagan worship and to worship the Lord alone. Pagan forms of worship are forbidden.

July 11 TLH 412 / LSB 698 Deuteronomy 13 The people will be tempted to serve false gods. We face the same temptation any time we feel the urge to prioritize anything or anyone above the Lord.

July 12 TLH 395 / LSB 696 Deuteronomy 14 Moses gives laws regarding clean and unclean foods and laws regarding tithing.

July 14 LSB 842 Deuteronomy 15 The people of Israel are to provide generously for one another. At the end of every seventh year, all debts are to be forgiven.

July 15 TLH 129 / LSB 409 Deuteronomy 16 Moses gives laws regarding the Israelite observance of the Passover, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Booths. Judges are to be appointed and are to rule justly. Pagan worship is forbidden.

July 16 TLH 605 / LSB 513 Deuteronomy 17 Moses gives laws regarding worship, gives priests and judges the authority to make legal decisions, and gives laws regarding the future monarchy.

July 17 TLH 144 / LSB 421 Proverbs 1 Solomon lays out the general theme of Proverbs: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7). Solomon warns his son against the temptation of sinners and urges his son to heed the call of wisdom.

July 18 TLH 133 / LSB 410 Proverbs 2 Solomon urges his son to pursue the wisdom of the Lord.

July 19 TLH 518 / LSB 750 Proverbs 3 Solomon exhorts his son to trust in the Lord, to honor the Lord, and to receive the discipline of the Lord. Solomon describes the great blessings that come with godly wisdom.

July 21 TLH 355 / LSB 526 Proverbs 4 Solomon instructs his children in the ways of wisdom.

July 22 LSB 539 Proverbs 5 Solomon encourages his son to pursue wisdom and knowledge and to avoid adultery.

July 23 TLH 294 / LSB 523 Proverbs 6 Solomon teaches his son to apply wisdom in daily life. Solomon warns his son against adultery.

July 24 TLH 381 / LSB 587 Proverbs 7 Solomon encourages his son to remember his teachings of wisdom. Solomon warns his son against the enticement of the adulteress.

July 25 TLH 544 Psalm 35 When men close to him have slandered him and have endangered his life, David cries to the Lord for justice and for salvation.

July 26 TLH 340 Psalm 36 When threatened by enemies, David clings to the steadfast love of the Lord.

July 28 TLH 36 / LSB 895 Psalm 37 The wicked prosper and slander the faithful. Even powerful leaders refuse to trust in the Lord. The Lord, however, will not forsake His faithful people.

July 29 TLH 402 / LSB 731 Psalm 38 Psalm 38 is the third of the seven “penitential psalms.” David attributes his suffering to the just wrath of the Lord and prays for deliverance.

July 30 TLH 586 Psalm 39 In a time of illness, David acknowledges his sin and affirms his trust in the Lord.

July 31 TLH 524 / LSB 734 Psalm 40 Even while living as an outlaw and fleeing for his life from Saul, David expresses his confidence in the love and deliverance of the Lord.
